About the area
A county that runs on septic
Marion County had about 442,660 residents in 2025, according to Census estimates, with about 71,753 in the City of Ocala. Most homes outside the city’s sewer area rely on septic. The county says almost 90,000 homes use septic systems.
Much of the county also lies within the Silver Springs and Rainbow Springs protection area, so septic rules here are stricter than in much of Florida. See permits & springs rules.
