Septic Pump & Alarm Repair in Ocala, FL

If your septic alarm is going off, the pump that moves wastewater to your drainfield may have stopped. Cut back on water now, then get it looked at before the tank backs up.

Mark your request urgent if the alarm is on right now.

How it works

What a septic pump does

Many Florida homes can’t send wastewater to the drainfield by gravity alone, often because the field sits higher than the tank or is far away. These systems have a pump tank: a separate tank, or a section of the septic tank, with a pump that sends effluent out to the drainfield.

Floats inside the pump tank turn the pump on and off. A separate high-water float triggers the alarm if the level keeps rising. That usually means the pump, a float or the power to the pump has failed.

The alarm is going off. What now?

  • Cut water use right away. No laundry, dishwasher or long showers.
  • Silence the alarm with its switch if it has one. The light stays on until the problem is fixed.
  • Check the breaker for the pump and alarm circuits.
  • Never open the pump tank or reach inside. Septic gases can be deadly.
  • Call for service if the alarm comes back or doesn’t clear.

The space above the pump’s “on” level gives you some reserve, but not much. Don’t wait days.

Permits

Do you need a permit?

Usually not for a straight swap. Florida’s septic rule says that servicing or replacing mechanical or electrical parts with like-kind parts doesn’t count as a “repair” for permit purposes. Changing the system’s design, or replacing the tank or drainfield, does need a Florida DEP permit.

If the pump keeps failing, the real problem may be the drainfield. See drainfield repair.

Questions

Septic pump FAQ

Why does my septic alarm go off after heavy rain?
Groundwater can leak into tanks and pipes, and a saturated drainfield drains slowly, so the pump tank fills faster than it can empty. Cut water use. If it doesn’t clear once the ground dries, get the system checked.
What happens if the power goes out?
The pump can’t run, so the tank keeps filling while you use water. Use as little water as possible until power is back.
How long do septic pumps last?
We couldn’t find a reliable figure for septic effluent pumps specifically. Pump life depends on the brand, how often it runs and whether solids reach the pump tank, so regular tank pumping helps.
